Get Down, Stay Down with Thao Nguyen at One Eyed Jacks

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down will be coming down to New Orleans on April 21 at One Eyed Jacks as a part of the alternative folk rock band’s 2016 Spring Tour.

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down’s new album “A Man Alive” was produced by Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs. Coming off the heels of the album’s recent release, the concert is sure to feature a significant number of newer tracks, which, while maintaining the core style of the folk group’s sound, drifts into newer, funky territory. In past albums, the San Francisco-based band had a folksy, acoustic sound with an underlying groove to it. “A Man Alive” highlights its groove element and develops it further with a bass-heavy album containing more grunge, perfect for the city that never lost its affinity for funk.

Lead singer-songwriter of Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, Thao Nguyen, blends an optimistic melodic sound with harshly real and raw lyrics while her fellow band members Adam Thompson, Johanna Kunin, Jason Slota and Charlie Glenn create an emotionally intricate experience. “A Man Alive,” despite its often-somber lyrical tones, many of which concern her relationship with her father, also garners more energy than Thao & the Get Down Stay Down’s past musical style and, in terms of concert styles, can be expected to be much more getting down than a mellow staying down kind of show the band may have played in the past. The show on Thursday will be alternative, but, above all else, active.

Tickets for the show are online and can be bought for $15. Stream “A Man Alive” below:
