Letter from the Editor: New staff works to better itself internally

Brandi Doyal, Editor-in-Chief

As a new year is about to begin at Tulane, the new Hullabaloo staff has already begun its work in serving as the eyes and ears of its community. The new staff will begin its work alongside incoming freshmen during the Summer Journalism Experience, kicking off their Tulane experience.

We have a board of over 20 members, and positions are always expanding into new divisions, as we see what The Hullabaloo can improve. We have expanded our art and illustration department, restructured our business team and are focusing on increasing our online presence through our video department by making the video section more interactive.

For the coming year, The Hullabaloo has designated its internal priorities as increasing the diversity of our staff, becoming more visible within the Tulane community and pushing our creativity to the edge by taking our digital platforms to the next level.

Our staff is more diverse than ever with three of the seven managing board members being students of color, and we have also seen an increase in diversity on our editorial board. We are geographically diverse with board members coming from 15 states and Canada, with California being the most represented with four members. This year we will have nine seniors, seven juniors and 11 sophomores serving on the board.

The job that we do — keeping the community informed and holding our university accountable — could not be done without this amazing volunteer staff. They dedicate countless hours each week to making The Hullabaloo run. Many of these students came in as freshmen looking for a place to belong at Tulane, and they stumbled upon our office in the Lavin-Bernick Center’s basement.

We want to encourage all students to get involved with The Hullabaloo, whether that be through hands-on activities like taking photos or just liking us on Facebook to stay informed about the community.

Being part of the student newspaper is always a demanding job as we prepare to put out 26 issues of The Hullabaloo and two issues of our magazine in the coming year. As we prepare to do our jobs, we hope that the Tulane community is always there with feedback and keeps us on our toes. The staff of The Hullabaloo is honored and excited to serve for its 112th year as your campus news organization.
