The Freret Street telephone poles smattered with multi-colored fliers are just one indication of the student music scene that bridges the Tulane University and Loyola University New Orleans populations.

One student band, The Bummers, will be playing at 9 p.m. this Friday at One Eyed Jacks. The group has performed previously at Fridays at the Quad on Tulane’s Uptown campus and at The Willow, but this will be its first time playing downtown.

“We’re really excited to play the songs from our upcoming EP in front of a crowd, and even more excited to play our first show in the French Quarter,” guitarist and vocalist Sean Doyle said.

The Bummers consists of Tulane sophomores Doyle, drummer Ethan May, guitarist and vocalist Ben Shooter and bass player Clay Hakes. Ben Shooter is also a member of The Hullabaloo as an Associate Arcade Editor. 

“It’s our first show with our new bassist Clay Hakes,” Doyle said. “He brings a new kind of energy to the performance.”

The Bummers will open for the self-described “psychedelic jukebox” Stoop Kids. The band has been a local favorite for the past couple of years; the unpredictable and theatrical group always makes for an exciting performance. The bill also features jam band Organized Crime.

Supporting fellow students should always be a priority here at Tulane, and it’s necessary to decompress after that first week of classes when schoolwork once again becomes a reality. What better way to do it all than a night of music in the French Quarter?
