Hurricane Katrina came and went and Mid-City is still standing. Its residents would like to honor that the best way New Orleanians know how: a big party.

The Mid-City Neighborhood Block Party exemplifies an attitude that is equally reflected through the traditional New Orleans-style funeral. While Hurricane Katrina continues to resonate in the hearts of all those who were forced from their homes and who suffered its tragedy, there has been significant recovery and development within the past 10 years as well. The city marches on as an evolution of what it once was, as opposed to an attempt to return to its conditions pre-Katrina. New Orleans residents choose to celebrate what they have, instead of focusing on what has been lost.

The Mid-City Neighborhood Organization will be hosting a block party from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Aug. 30 at Finn McCool’s Irish Pub.

MCNO is an organization that aims to improve the lives of the residents of the Mid-City neighborhood. The title for this block party is “Mid-City. 10 years later. The Beat Goes On.” This party is promoted as a celebration of Mid-City’s development over the decade.

MCNO was founded in 1990 by the culmination of two civic associations that aimed to fight the issues facing the neighborhood-in-decline. It has since contributed to the development of Mid-City through the restoration of buildings and parks, and their regularly planned social events that attract new residents and strengthen the sense of community among Mid-City citizens.

The block party will celebrate the progress made since Katrina, as well as emphasize the New Orleans personality traits of dedication, perseverance and revelry.
