The Musical Theatre Workshop will take a cue from the silver screen and perform the legendary play “Into the Woods” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Dixon Hall.

“Into the Woods” showcases the story of fairytales gone wrong, including classic stories such as “Cinderella” and “Little Red Riding Hood.”

Sophomore Kelly DelDuca, who will play the role of Little Red Riding Hood, said the unique aspect of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical make it stand out.

“Not a lot of musicals are like that,” Deluca said. “It’s either a comedy throughout the whole thing, or a drama throughout the whole thing, but with this you get a little taste of everything.”

Senior Harrison Lang, who plays the role of Milky White in the musical, shed light on the intricacies of Sondheim’s music that “Into the Woods” presents.

“It is melodic, and it’s beautiful,” Lang said. “It’s not your typical musical theatre’s Broadway show. Sondheim … writes specifically for the emotion of a character as opposed to this big spectacle number.”

The director of this production is B. Michael Howard, Tulane’s head of the Musical Theatre program. The cast and crew are comprised of the students in the Musical Theatre Workshop, who have worked toward the production of this musical all semester. The preparation involves a lot of hard work and time commitment, but putting together such a distinctive show has its perks.

“I would say that this might be my favorite production so far,” Lang said. “I think this is the cast I’ve had the most fun with. We are going to have a really good show.”
