Update: 10:25 p.m.

The LSPCA told The Advocate that the video depicts young men standing in a circle around a plastic children’s pool. The goat has a string tied around its neck and is hanging from an object above. After one man beheads the goat, the other men cheer while the goat’s legs continue to move. The man who beheads the goat then picks up the body, and the video ends, LSPCA said.

Director of Fraternity and Sorority Programs Liz Schafer said the anonymous tip about the goat was first sent to her department. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Programs then referred the case to TUPD.

Fraternity and Sorority Programs employees met with TUPD detectives Tuesday to identify the people in the cellphone video and where the video was shot. Schafer said that the backyard did not belong to Zeta Psi or Phi Gamma Delta fraternities, the houses in question.

The law enforcement division of the LSPCA, in conjunction with NOPD and TUPD, continued the investigation by checking the fraternity houses’ backyards. Schafer said the investigators confirmed that the incident in question did not occur at either house.

“From what we have been able to view, we have absolutely no reason to believe that anyone at Tulane was involved in this,” Schafer said.

TUPD is no longer investigating the incident, but NOPD continues to do so.

A similar event occurred in late January when a headless baby goat was found in Brechtel Park in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. The incidents do not appear to be linked.

Original Story:

Allegations of the body of a goat being found in the backyard of a house on the 700 block of Broadway Street have sparked an investigation by Tulane University Police Department and the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The allegations follow the circulation of a cellphone video depicting several young men beheading a goat in a children’s pool.

Executive Director of Public Relations Michael Strecker said Tulane is cooperating with the investigation and that there is no evidence a member of the Tulane community is involved.

New Orleans Police Department conducted a search around 1 p.m. of a house on the 700 block of Broadway and did not find any evidence linking to the video.

LSPCA is offering a $13,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible.
