Joseph Merrick Jones Memorial Hall’s fire alarm activated and occupants evacuated the building at approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Sources report that classes were cancelled upon the fire alarm being activated.

Jon Barnwell, Tulane University Police Department superintendent, said this was due to an elevator that got stuck, causing the alarm to sound. The elevator was not occupied at the time.

The alarm could not be turned off till after the elevator was unstuck. The elevator was unstuck approximately 45 minutes later. The hall was cleared to be reentered when the fire alarm was deactivated.
