Tulane football announced the hiring of Carter Sheridan to serve as the new wide receivers coach and the promotion of Jason Rollins to co-defensive coordinator Tuesday. Doug Lichtenberger will work as linebackers’ coach and coordinator for special teams.

Sheridan has spent the last 12 seasons with New Orleans Saints as an offensive assistant for wide receivers. Head coach Curtis Johnson and Sheridan worked together between 2009-11 with the Saints. While Johnson was the wide receivers coach for the Saints, Sheridan served as his assistant.

Sheridan went to St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, Louisiana and played defensive back for Florida A&M from 1996-98.

“[Sheridan] was my assistant with the Saints and I promised him a job when I came to Tulane,” Johnson said. “We are glad to have him on board with us.”

Lichtenberger will return to the sidelines after being the assistant athletic director for football operations and recruiting for the past three years. Lichtenberger oversaw special teams during the 2010 campaign and served as the interim special teams coach towards the end of the 2013 season.

“We interviewed a lot of people and [Lichtenberger] was the best fit for what we do here,” Johnson said. “He’s a fantastic special teams coach and at the linebacker position, he can do that also.”

Rollins, who is the longest tenured coach at Tulane at seven seasons, will remains the secondary coach but join Lionel Washington as a co-defensive coordinator.

Other changes to the coaching staff during this offseason include new recruiting coordinator David Johnson and director of football operations Byron Ellis.

The 2015-16 football season kicks off against Duke Sept. 3 at Yulman Stadium.
