Arcade’s Top Picks for Summer Superhero Movies of 2017

With the summer coming to a close and many films still yet to come, it seems as though 2017 will be remembered for some of the most successful superhero movies in recent years. Arcade has compiled a list containing a few popular examples of the year’s best comic-book-inspired movies.

Wonder Woman

“Wonder Woman” is a must-see for the entire family. A fast-paced and action-packed edge-of-your-seat thriller that will leave viewers hanging on for more. “Wonder Woman” is easily one of summer 2017’s best movies, paving the way for future DC Extended Universe films.

Directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, the film marks the first silver screen adaptation of the iconic heroine in the 75 years since her creation in 1941. Prior to 2017, Wonder Woman has appeared only in comic books, cartoons and live-action TV serials.

Combining World War II with Greek mythology, “Wonder Woman” embraces the character’s historic origins while exposing the many social barriers that women faced in the male-dominated society of the 1940s. The film grossed about $395 million at the box office domestically, surpassing “Batman v. Superman,” the previous installment in the DC Extended Universe, which grossed about $330 million domestically.

Spiderman: Homecoming

Following two failed attempts by Sony Studios to generate a multi-movie Spiderman franchise comes yet another reboot, one which reunites the famous web-head with his fellow superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Centered around a younger version of Peter Parker, “Spiderman: Homecoming” accurately depicts both a high school setting and the struggles that teenagers encounter in their daily lives while also exploring the added responsibilities of being a superhero. Foregoing Spidey’s well-known origin, Homecoming instead focuses on the challenges Peter faces in trying to lead a normal life and dealing with the consequences of his alter ego. The film makes use of profanity and crude humor suited for more mature audiences, which contributes to the film’s tone and setting.

Though succeeding the domestic box office “Amazing Spiderman,” Homecoming failed to gross as much as Sam Raimi’s Spiderman Trilogy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” we revisit our favorite intergalactic heroes for another adventure. Vol. 2 centers around team leader Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) who learns about his origins upon meeting his father, Ego (Kurt Russell). Director James Gunn maintains the humor we loved in Vol. 1 while managing to balance it with endearing family themes throughout the film.

Though the first installment of the series brings the Guardians together, viewers get a better understanding of each character and their backgrounds in order to bring them closer together to defeat a great threat to the universe. These deep moments among characters add dimension the film and, once again, leave us wanting more, just as we wanted more at the end of Vol. 1.

While many tend to be skeptical of sequels, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” holds up better compared to other Marvel sequels and offers an exciting continuation of an enjoyable series.
