Prytania Theatre to showcase films of internationally revered director Miyazaki

Prytania Theatre, the single oldest single screen movie house operating in Louisiana, will continue its Sunday Night Series starting on Sunday. The series highlights outstanding directors around the world. In the past, the Prytania has chosen directors such as David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson.

This time around, the showcase presents the works of highly revered Japanese director, Hayao Miyazaki. Over a six-decade career, Miyazaki has produced countless critically acclaimed animated films including ”Spirited Away,” the first anime film to earn an American Academy Award.

The theater, celebrating its 100th year in operation, will display the series using state of the art sound and projection, a Sony Digital 4k projector paired with 7.1 Dolby Digital Sound.

In addition to ”Spirited Away,” Prytania will also show ”Princess Mononoke,” ”My Neighbor Totoro,” ”Howl’s Moving Castle” and ”Castle in the Sky” this fall.

Miyazaki’s films all carry a similar feel to them, often relying on recurring themes collecting to create a larger picture. The director draws from his own background as a pacifist, feminist and his belief that humanity should remain rooted in nature. The crux of most of Miyazaki’s films revolve around the difficulty involved in remaining committed to these principles in the face of ambiguous dangers.

All showings, which feature the Japanese dubbed versions of the films with English subtitle, will take place at 10 p.m. Each individual showing costs $10.

Paige Brunet, co-operator of the theater, realized the majority of people would want to catch the whole series.  Therefore, the Prytania will offer package deals on all five tickets for only $40. An added bonus for all patrons over the age of 21, the theatre is BYOB for all screenings.
