If you are looking for a great time with great food, great performances and a lot of dancing, the India Association of Tulane University has got just the thing for you. On Saturday, Nov. 17, IATU will host its semi-annual event, Diwali, at the JW Marriott Hotel.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is a holiday celebrated across India. Though it is celebrated mainly in the Hindu region, it is observed through various religions and cultural practices. The holiday signifies the victory of good over evil.

IATU has been hosting the event for several years. According to Tulane senior and Public Relations Chair Sejal Agrawal, the event gives some Tulane students the opportunity to continue their holiday traditions while they are away from home.

“I think it’s really important for people to have this type of representation on campus,” Agrawal said. “It’s a place where students of Indian descent can celebrate their culture … but it’s a way that they can celebrate it in a way and make them feel kinda connected to their home.”

The celebration will feature several performances, including two dance groups from Louisiana State University, Tulane’s POCapella and Tulane’s Bollywood dance team, Jazbaa. Free dinner will also be served.

The festival, sophomore and Outreach Chair of IATU Ashley Antony says, can be a great way for students to learn about Diwali and have fun.

“I think Tulane students should come because it’s a great way to get off campus and it’s a semiformal event so students can come dressed up,” Antony said. “They can bring dates. It’s great way to get off campus to celebrate something that you may not know anything about.”

The night will officially begin at 6 p.m., and free transportation is provided. Students are encouraged to dress in formal attire.

The event is currently sold out, but for more information regarding this event, or to learn more about IATU, visit their website at https://www.facebook.com/IndiaAssociationOfTulaneUniversity/.
