It is time to discuss the most important day in February. Don’t worry hopeless romantics and lonely-hearts club members, it’s not Valentine’s day. It is the much more important holiday recently added to our calendars by none other than Leslie Knope in “Parks and Recreation.”

Palentine’s Day has been celebrated on Feb. 13 since the Netflix favorite “Parks and Recreation” aired the iconic episode “Galentine’s Day” in 2010. Now that the month is in full swing, everyone is gearing up for the excessive amount of lovey-dovey decorations that are sure to appear across campus.

There are many mixed feelings when it comes to this celebration of love or, as the haters refer to it, “outburst of commercialism.” When it comes to Palentine’s day, observers lose the controversy of Valentine’s Day and can openly embrace a day that is meant to celebrate the people they need and love the most: great friends.

Every college student knows just how crucial a top-notch squad is to lean on when the semester gets busy. It is easy to get lost in the haze of essays, PJ’s coffee, Mardi Gras shopping and club meetings. Palentine’s day provides the perfect opportunity to stop and show some gratitude for your ride or die homies. Leslie Knope prioritizes it best, “We need to remember what’s important in life friends, waffles, work. Or waffles, friends, work. Doesn’t matter, but work is third.”

Like always, New Orleans has no shortage of activities The Hullabaloo recommends to embrace the special day. You can stick with tradition and throw a breakfast feast just like Leslie Knope. Some great restaurants close to campus to try are Willa Jean, Toast, Humble Bagel, French Truck Coffee and Bearcat Cafe. Like every other holiday celebrated appropriately, and most weekends for those on their way to gaining the “Tulane ton,” calories consumed on Palentine’s Day don’t count.

After breakfast, spend some quality time with friends at the Fly. Bring a blanket, snacks and a speaker. This provides the opportunity to simply enjoy each other’s company, truly in tune with what the day is all about. Another idea is to relax at a spa. If you’re ballin’ on a budget, try Cindy’s Nails and Spa or Gloss Nails and Spa, which offer 10 percent student discounts when you present your Splash Card.

If you want to show your friends appreciation through the love language of gifts, consider a gift exchange, the perfect solution for busier friend groups. This way, you can include as many of your friends as possible without having to figure out a gift for each person. The website DrawNames.com can help to facilitate a ‘secret-Santa style’ anonymous pairing.

Whether you decide to go all out or just tag your friends in cheesy memes and call it a day, take the opportunity to indulge in the presence of the ones you love most this Palentine’s day. After all, no one could get through life without a best friend. Show them how much they mean to you this Feb.13!
