This past weekend, the Green Wave baseball team had an extremely successful season opener against the George Washington University Colonials at Tulane’s own Turchin Stadium. The three-part series set an overwhelmingly positive tone for the 2019 season with the Green Wave’s sweep.

In the first game, The Green Wave earned a 2-0 lead over the Colonials prior to the final two innings when the Colonials managed to tie up the score. An error by the GW shortstop allowed freshman Hudson Haskin to score a crucial run in the ninth inning, restoring the team’s lead and resulting in an overall score of 3-2. Redshirt senior Kaleb Roper was crucial in the team’s path to victory, managing to pitch five strikeouts and allowing only four hits over the span of seven innings.

The Green Wave went nonstop during the second game of the series despite a few nail-biting innings. Freshman Aaron McKeithan experienced his first hit as a college athlete during the fifth inning. Not long after, a hit from David Bedgood allowed both he and McKeithan to put two more runs on the scoreboard for the Green Wave.

Although the Green Wave entered the eighth inning at a two-run disadvantage (6-4), sophomore Kobi Owen soon bridged this gap with a home run that evened the score for the Green Wave. The game was extended due to a 6-6 tie in the ninth inning. Freshman pitcher Krishna Raj made his collegiate debut, carrying the team to the bottom of the 13th inning where redshirt junior Grant Mathews clinched the win with a walk-off sacrifice RBI.

In the series finale, the team proved to be indomitable with yet another win over the Colonials. The Green Wave shut down GW with a final score of 16-6 in 14 hits all while making no errors.

Having just finished a two-part series against Lamar University, Tulane baseball remains undefeated. Overall, fans of the Green Wave have every reason to expect a prosperous season for the team thanks to their winning streak so far. Tulane baseball will next be tested on Feb. 22 in a three-part series against University of Mississippi Rebels.
