Tulane swimming and diving seeks to impress in AAC Championships

Tulane swimming and diving continues to ride a high tide as it navigates its way into the postseason. Coming off of a victory against Southern Methodist University, the team hopes to continue the trend with yet another win at the American Athletic Conference Championships later this week.

Despite this season’s rocky beginnings, the Green Wave has stood strong in the face of adversity. Tulane fell to each of its opponents in the first five meets before finally gaining traction against the Loyola University of New Orleans on Oct. 26, where it dominated the Wolfpack 250-40.

This much-needed win gave the Green Wave the confidence it desperately needed, allowing the team to win several of the subsequent meets or at least place within the top half of the participating schools at a given event.

The swimming and diving team completed its regular season on Feb. 8 in a meet against SMU. After capturing an early lead, the swimmers struggled to keep this momentum going. Tulane, however, was relentless in its efforts and the team finally came together to win nine races. This resilience resulted in yet another Green Wave victory with a final score of 154-146.

One of the shining stars of the team, the American Athletic Conference recently named sophomore Kate McDonald Female Swimmer of the Week due to her outstanding performance against SMU.

McDonald brought home three individual wins while aiding her relay team to victory as well. This splashing sophomore will likely swim the team into victory over the next few years, as she holds the fifth best time for the 100-meter breaststroke in the entire league this season, along with the NCAA B-Cut time for the 200-meter breaststroke.

As it moves into championship season, the team hopes to post a stronger performance than it did last year, when the Green Wave placed just sixth overall in the NCAA American Conference championship.

This year’s swimming and diving American Athletic Conference championships begin on Feb. 27 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
