An unidentified person’s body was found between 9 and 9:30 a.m. on Monday in the Audubon Park lagoon.

Park-goers contacted 911 after seeing a body floating. One of the initial callers described the body as a middle-aged person wearing running clothes, according to The Advocate.

The body was removed from the lagoon by a New Orleans firefighter and placed in a coroner’s van shortly before noon.

New Orleans Police Department said it was an unclassified death pending an autopsy. When contacted for comment, NOPD’s Communications Director Tyler Gamble said that they could not identify the victim or confirm cause of death until a coroner releases a report.

While some areas immediately surrounding the lagoon are closed, most of the park is still open to the public. The affected area of the lagoon is located on the east side of the park between Magazine and Prytania streets.
