Tulane Athletics and AT&T recently invited reporters and media outlets to take a tour of the technology improvements made to Yulman Stadium.

At a typical Tulane football game, you can find students using their cellphones to tweet big moments from the game, take selfies in their Green Wave gear or check in with the Tulane Green Wave Gameday app.

That’s why Yulman Stadium has teamed up with AT&T to create a stronger cellular network for the most interactive fan experience possible.

“You can seamlessly talk, text, surf or stream during the game even under massive capacity demands and never miss a beat, which helps patrons and fans stay connected to the world and also share their experience on game day,” Stephen Ursini, senior real estate and construction manager for AT&T said.

A new Distributed Antenna System has been installed to facilitate this wireless experience. This system consists of an entire network of tiny antennas distributing AT&T wireless coverage to fans. According to Ursini, Yulman Stadium is a seven sector site that serves tens of thousands of people.

“It provides extra cellular capacity and shortens the distance a call or text must travel,” a recent AT&T press release said. “This means calls, texts and posts are less likely to get stuck in a cellular ‘traffic jam.’”

Aside from texting and calling their friends, students can also deliver instant feedback regarding stadium conditions through Tulane’s Gameday app. The boost in mobile internet coverage will also allow fans to access online stats and post their own game day updates with a stronger, more efficient network. No Green Wave pride selfie nor live tweet will go unposted due to weak cell service or too many fans using the service at once.

“As a Tulane alumna, I am always proud to hear about the growth of my alma mater whether it’s through fundraising, in the classroom or with technology investments,” Senator Karen Carter Peterson said. “The strength of our state’s economy relies on innovation and investment.AT&T’s DAS technology helps enhance the quality of life for Tulane students, faculty and fans alike. I am excited that I can cheer on the Wave and share game stats faster with friends and family from my mobile phone device.”

Students and fans can experience this updated wireless network at 7 p.m. this Saturday at the Green Wave’s first home game against the Southern University Jaguars at Yulman Stadium.
