The Arcade’s top five picks from King Cake Festival 2017
- Nonna Randazzo’s Bakery – 3.5 stars
This stand’s serving style was unique, with each sample coming in an individually packaged container and served with a spoon. The Arcade tried both the praline and cream cheese flavors and were impressed by both. This stand also appeared to be the busiest for purchases of full-size king cakes. In terms of both innovation and execution, Nonna Randazzo’s was one to remember.
- Maurice’s French Pastries – 4 stars
Maurice’s French Pastries has two locations, both in Metairie, but its king cakes are right at home in New Orleans. The traditional French bakery won the “People’s Choice” award at the 2016 festival, and it continued its strong showing in 2017. This stand had by far the longest line for samples, but it was well worth the wait.
- Caywood & Randazzo Bakery – 4 stars Caywood & Randozzo Bakery sample
This bakery was 2016’s winner for “Best Traditional King Cake,” and it definitely deserves that title again. Caywood & Randazzo does the classic king cake better than anyone, and its icing is especially excellent. The Arcade already held Caywood & Rondazzo in high regard, but it didn’t hurt that we found the plastic baby in our sample from this stand.
- Mr. Ronnie’s Famous Hot Donuts – 4.5 stars
Mr. Ronnie’s sets itself apart by turning traditional and specialty king cakes into delicious donut creations. With options ranging from pecan praline to Bavarian
cream, Mr. Ronnie’s is certainly a king cake vendor worth checking out. The stand also offered king cake-frosted donuts for a dollar.
- Cannata’s King Cakes – 5 stars
Cannata’s King Cakes offers the ideal flavor, consistency and texture combination for any king cake fanatic. With a focus on specialty flavors, Cannata’s puts a little twist on the traditional king cake. This year’s specialty flavor was Gooey Butter Snickerdoodle, and The Arcade felt it certainly deserved best in show. Cannata’s offers over 60 flavors of king cake, with the full array available online.
