August 29, 2019
The Hullabaloo will provide further updates as they become available.
Tulane freshman Jake Vandercar died shortly after an attempted suicide this afternoon, Tulane President Mike Fitts told the community via email.
The student resided in Sharp Residence Hall.
Emergency Services responded to his on-campus residence, and Vandercar was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Fitts sent an email this afternoon notifying staff, faculty and students of the death.
“Though he was a member of the Tulane family for only a brief time, Jake touched the lives of many on our campus,” Fitts wrote. “His loss is a devastating blow as we begin the new academic year. The thoughts and prayers of the entire community are with Jake’s loved ones and friends during this most difficult time.”
Students who need additional support tonight should contact the Residential Advisor or Director on call in their residence hall. Students may also call the on-call Case Manager at (504) 920-9900.
After hours, students may access The Line for confidential counseling services at (504) 264-6074 or the Student Affairs Professional On-Call at (504) 920-9900. Students may also email [email protected] to communicate with a Case Manager. Students may walk in to CAPS for Counseling Services (located in the Science & Engineering Lab Complex) or Case Management and Victim Support Services (located in the LBC, G02) from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
The Employee Assistance Program is available for faculty and staff seeking counseling or support. Information about Employee Assistance Programs can be found at https://hr.tulane.edu/benefits/employee-assistance-program.
The Hullabaloo reports on student death according to specific protocols, which can be found here.

I’m so sorry for the family and friends of this student. I hope what all of you take from this tragedy is that there’s always someone who is going through a bad time and doesn’t know where to turn. Please, please be aware that YOU could be someone’s solution. Sometime it only takes a sympathetic ear or or a shoulder to cry on. Let’s all try to be more aware.

I’m so sorry for this student, but also for his roommates if he had any. What a traumatic experience to have in the first week of college.
