The Tulane Hullabaloo Views editors endorse Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
We, the editors, are students. Students who care about the continued stability of American democracy. Students who care about the right of women to make their own decisions about their bodies. Students who recognize that there has never been a man more unfit for the presidency than the twice impeached felon at the top of the Republican ticket. This makes Harris the only choice for those who care about the future of our nation.
Benjamin Franklin referred to America as “A republic, if you can keep it.” After losing the 2020 election, Donald Trump engaged in a plot to overthrow our republic. After losing lawsuit after lawsuit, Trump and his campaign began to pressure Republican officials in swing states to overturn their election results.
They attempted to replace members of the electoral college with fake electors who would vote for Trump in swing states that Biden won. He also attempted to use the Justice Department to lend credence to his claims of fraud.
Trump’s Attorney General, William Barr, refused to entertain Trump’s claims of fraud, and resigned. Trump then began pressuring Barr’s successor, Jeffrey Rosen, to say that the election wasn’t legitimate. Trump said to him, “Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the republican congressmen.”
When Rosen refused, Trump tried to promote a mid-level Justice Department official named Jeffrey Clark to acting Attorney General, because he would pursue Trump’s election lies. During a Jan. 3 Oval Office meeting, Rosen and other high-ranking Justice Department officials, along with members of the White House counsel’s office, informed Trump that they would all resign in protest if he appointed Clark to succeed Rosen.
Trump then began urging Pence to use his role of reading electoral votes aloud before Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, to recognize the alternate, illegitimate pro-Trump slates of electors from swing states. Pence courageously refused.
The January 6th insurrection shortly followed. Trump tweeted at 2:24 PM that day, “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution.”
This plot against American democracy was reined in by people with principles, who cared more about the Constitution than Trump. During a second Trump term, no chance.
Trump plans to fire government employees and replace them with political loyalists. Trump’s supporters argue that the number is 50,000 employees; however, Everett Kelley, national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, a union representing federal workers, puts that number closer to 500,000.
Jacqueline Simon, policy director of that same group, said: “The question is: do you want people with the skills, expertise and credentials to perform their jobs, or do you want people who love Donald Trump? If that’s what the main factor is, to get a job, you won’t have the same food safety, workplace safety, consumer product safety, mine safety, and clean air and water.”
If elected, Trump will use all the power at his disposal to implement a far-right agenda that would further restrict the right to an abortion, protections for the LGBTQ+ community, union workers or simply anyone who may oppose him. There won’t be an Oval Office meeting where people stand up to him. They will fall in line with his dictatorial impulses.
The Biden-Harris administration made positive strides in several areas, including infrastructure, the environment, scientific innovation and job creation. The Hullaballoo is confident Harris will continue these policies and contribute a different perspective to the White House.
In this election, there are simple contrasts. She will protect the right to choose; he will not. On the issue of reality, she acknowledges it; he doesn’t. On democracy, she supports it; he opposes it. He has time and time again embarrassed America on the world stage; she will not. He doesn’t respect our troops; she does.
The Tulane Hullabaloo strongly endorses Kamala Harris, the only patriotic choice, for president of the United States of America.
