A rescue team captured Scrim, a four-legged escape artist beloved to Mid-City New Orleans, at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23 after seven months on the run.
Rescuers saved the 13-pound terrier mutt, dubbed the “Houdini” of New Orleans on social media, after he wandered into a fenced-in field, allowing rescuers to prick him with a tranquilizer dart.
Upon examination, veterinarians at the Metairie Small Animal Hospital found two small bullets lodged in the dog, along with a missing toenail, a missing chunk of his ear and wounds on his chest and tail.
Last spring, Michelle Cheramie, the owner of Zeus’ Rescues, rescued Scrim from euthanasia at a North Shore dog pound. Shortly after placing Scrim in an adoptive Mid-City home, the terrier fled the family’s backyard.
During Scrim’s escape, Cheramie and a group of volunteers used community reporting, tracking and digital mapping to pursue the terrier. After several failed attempted trappings, nettings and dartings, Scrim is finally back in safe hands.
Tammy Murray, co-founder of the nonprofit New Orleans Animal Welfare Society, told the Associated Press that she plans to adopt Scrim after his recovery.
