The matchup:
For the first time since 2013, the Big Easy is hosting Super Bowl 59. New Orleans has been a staple city for Super Bowls dating back to Super Bowl 9 when the game was played at Tulane Stadium in January of 1970.
A city known for its bustling nightlife and large green “grenade” drinks, it only makes sense that it hosts one of the biggest events in sports, where some of the wildest, most degenerate gamblers and drinkers come to celebrate their favorite teams since childhood battling it out for a chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
After another action-packed NFL season, Super Bowl 59 is officially set, with the Philadelphia Eagles facing off against the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch from two years ago. The last Super Bowl matchup between these two teams certainly lived up to the hype, too, as the high-scoring, back-and-forth affair concluded with Harrison Butker’s 27-yard field goal in the closing seconds to cap off the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory 38-35.
This year’s game is even more highly anticipated, as the stakes have never been higher for either team. The Kansas City Chiefs followed their Super Bowl win over the Eagles with another three-point Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers, making this year’s Super Bowl an opportunity to win their third consecutive Super Bowl.
While eight teams in the Super Bowl era have won back-to-back championships, none have been able to complete the hat trick. The Chiefs have an incredibly rare opportunity to make history and ESPN Bet currently have them as 1.5-point favorites to do just that.
The Philadelphia Eagles also have high stakes, returning to the Super Bowl one year removed from their heartbreaking loss to the Chiefs. The Eagles will return with many players from that 2023 Super Bowl roster, most notably quarterback Jalen Hurts, in addition to head coach Nick Sirianni.
The Eagles are equipped with a massive offseason addition this time, however, as superstar running back Saquon Barkley left the New York Giants to come to play in Philadelphia and has exploded onto the scene in year one.
Barkley has had an all-time great season, tallying over 2,000 yards rushing in the regular season, including 15 total touchdowns. He has only gotten better in the playoffs too, as he comes off a 118-yard, three-touchdown game this past weekend in their NFC Championship victory over the Washington Commanders. With a healthy Barkley to go along with their veteran-laden team, this might be the Eagles’ best chance to capture a Super Bowl before their window closes.
Whenever you have stars like Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Travis Kelce, Saquon Barkley — and Taylor Swift — battling it out, it’s sure to be box office madness. Will Patrick Mahomes solidify himself as a GOAT candidate? Will Saquon Barkley complete arguably the greatest season ever for a running back? Will Travis Kelce propose to Taylor Swift in a pile of confetti? We’ll have to see how it all unfolds, but one thing I know for sure is that there is no better place on the planet for this massive event than New Orleans.
This week in NOLA:
Super Bowl week officially kicks off Monday with Super Bowl Opening Night at the Caesars Superdome. For $20, fans can watch as the teams get introduced, players get interviewed by the media — including us! — and even meet different NFL legends.
There will also be a fan Super Bowl Experience from Wednesday to Saturday at the Convention Center. With interactive games, autographs from star players and the opportunity to take a photo with the Lombardi Trophy, it’s definitely an experience to take advantage of.
Before game time, there will also be several fan tailgates downtown. The NFL tailgate will feature a performance by Post Malone, while Guy Fieri is hosting a “Flavortown Tailgate” at Mardi Gras World.
A few nights before the game, Mardi Gras World will host Shaq’s Fun House, featuring performances from the diesel himself and several other artists.
If there was any time to make a trip downtown or even to the Caesars Casino, it is this week, as the entire French Quarter will be packed with NFL fans, players and media members. That being said, there will be a lot of rowdy Eagles fans, so proceed with caution. If the Eagles win, there is a chance the French Quarter might be in flames, so we’ve got to make the most of it while we can.
Stay tuned for more coverage throughout Super Bowl week!
