With baseball season just days away, the past few months have been huge for the Green Wave baseball team. As the team prepares for its opening home series against University of Nebraska Omaha, they seem to be in a great place both physically and mentally.
One of the big moves that the Green Wave made was signing head coach Jay Uhlman to a two-year contract extension through June 2029. Uhlman has shown to be an incredible leader, managing the Green Wave to two consecutive league titles and adding even more star recruits to the roster.
Uhlman’s philosophy is to not only win championships but also “develop, challenge, and create positive relationships with our players.” He takes pride in bonding the team on and off the field, which fosters a community where the players not only want to play the best baseball they can but also be the best versions of themselves. Signing Uhlman to an extension is precisely what Tulane baseball needed, and I think every fan is excited to see where he takes the team over the next few years.
With every great coach comes great captains, and a couple of days ago, teammates awarded that honor to none other than in/outfielder Gavin Schulz and pitcher Carter Benbrook. Schulz came off a monster season, hitting .303 with a .517 slugging percentage. The senior was also previously “voted among the top 50 third basemen in the country” by D1 baseball. Schulz has proven to be one of Tulane’s leaders over the past couple of seasons and will continue that job as one of the 2025 captains. Benbrook also put out an impressive 46 strikeouts over 39.1 innings pitched last season. His experience as a graduate student will also benefit the rest of the team, especially the younger guys.
It is going to be an exciting year for the Green Wave, which will begin at home on Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
