The Tulane University Green Wave — 2023 and 2024 American Athletic Conference baseball champions — opened their season against the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks on Feb. 14. They won all three games in the series, scoring at least 10 runs in all three games. The offense was spectacular; six players had an on-base plus slugging above 1.000 in the opening series. The team OPS was 0.956. The Green Wave also displayed both their speed and good decision-making on the base paths, stealing five bases on six attempts.
Tulane won the first game 12-10. I enjoyed watching the game, especially the bottom of the third inning when the Green Wave offense scored five runs. They scored five runs once again in the sixth inning. Amazingly, the game was tied 10-10 in the middle of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Tulane took the lead after Andrew McKenna hit a home run. The Green Wave prevented Omaha from scoring in the top of the ninth, and pitcher Jacob Moore got the win.
Tulane won the second game 10-4. The offense was great again, scoring 10 runs in just the first five innings. Tulane’s offense got 11 hits and six walks. The pitching was also excellent. John-Paul Sauer allowed no runs in his college debut. In total, the bullpen recorded 12 strikeouts. Blaise Wilcenski got the win. Overall, a great team effort earned the Green Wave their second win of the 2025 season.
The Green Wave also won the final game of the series 10-7. Tulane scored an impressive eight runs in the third inning. Matthias Haas continued to perform well at the plate, getting two hits and two RBI. Jason Wachs also had two hits and drew two walks. With bases loaded in the eighth inning, Brock Slaton got hit by a pitch, getting the Green Wave their 10th run of the game.
For the first time ever, the Green Wave scored at least 10 runs in all three games of their opening series. The future is bright as the freshman got seven hits, seven runs and nine RBIs.
