From March 17 to March 22, Tulane’s Asian American Student Union is hosting CelebrAsian week, to celebrate 30 years of the club promoting the culture of Asian American students on campus. Although anyone is welcome to join, AASU provides a safe space for Asian American students at a PWI that is essential for building and maintaining community.
To kick off the conviviality, club members will be tabling on McAlister on Monday between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., giving out free boba to students passing by who answer AASU-related trivia questions. Another annual tradition upheld this year is their 3 vs. 3 basketball in the Reily Recreation Center’s auxiliary gym on Tuesday, starting at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 19, at 6 p.m., AASU is partnering with Green Wave Films to host a film festival featuring Bobby Yan, an award-winning writer, director, editor and producer who founded the club in 1995. The film festival will show some of his short films and include food catered from Pho Bang, a local Vietnamese restaurant.
From 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, AASU has coordinated a collaboration with the Malkin Sacks Commons featuring Asian culinary dishes and music. The event will also feature a performance by the Rising Dragon Lion Dance Team at 7 p.m.
To close out the celebrations, Friday at 6 p.m. marks CelebrAsian Day, featuring a discussion and Q&A with Karan Brar, known for his acting performances in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Jessie, Bunk’d, Hubie Halloween and The Night Shift. Other performers include the Southern Lotus Lion Dancers from Baton Rouge, Jazbaa and TUTones. AASU will also provide catered Indian and Pakistani food and host giveaway raffles for attendees.
