The Orleans Parish School Board’s annual performance scores were released in November of 2024. On the state’s 150-point scale, the district received a score of 74, nearly five points higher than in 2023. The district has maintained a “C” letter grade for three years in a row but was rated highest in the state for student improvement.
Among the 70 schools within the district, 48 of them saw an increase in their school performance score, including alternative schools. Additionally, 90% of all schools received an “A” or “B” in the progress index, which measures student growth from the previous year. Fourteen schools received a grade of “D,” which is 21% less than in 2022. Only one school received an “F” letter grade.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools across the state were shut down for over a year. Many schools shifted to virtual learning, which caused performance to decrease nationally. Despite setbacks from the pandemic, Orleans Parish schools show significant improvement, with many schools surpassing their scores from before COVID-19.
Benjamin Franklin High School leads Orleans Parish public schools with 130.6 points, the highest-scoring public school for three consecutive years. The Willow School and Lake Forest Elementary Charter follow with 122.5 and 118 points respectively.
OPSB contracts charter schools for a limited number of years. When their contract is in its final year, each school faces a renewal process based on their performance scores. The School Performance Renewal Index measures the same factors evaluated for the school performance score. However, the SPRI is weighted so that the growth of the students has more importance. If the score received in the final year of the contract is too low, or the school’s total enrollment is too small, the school will face permanent closure. Lafayette Academy, Living School and Robert Russa Moton all closed following the most recent renewal cycle.
Some schools facing renewal in 2025 are Bricolage Academy, Dr. Martin Luther King Charter School for Sci Tech and Einstein Charter at Sherwood Forest.
