With tons of news breaking daily from college programs across the country, Netflix has partnered with a select few to debut its newest reality TV show, “Mid-Major Madness.” With the official announcement coming just hours ago, Netflix also released the cast for its first season, and none other than Tulane men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter will be front and center with a starring role.
The choice was easy for Netflix as Hunter’s boisterous and erratic personality, most notably with his screaming meltdowns on the sideline and midgame sparring duels with Memphis coach Penny Hardaway, makes for great TV. Ron Hunter might be the most interesting man in Louisiana, and Netflix will be following him and the men’s basketball program for the next 12 months as they capture the spectacle of Ron Hunter.
Ron Hunter has been making major headlines for over a decade now, as he jumped into national headlines after tearing his Achilles celebrating a win. Shortly after, Hunter fell out of his chair, which was meant to protect his Achilles, when his son, R.J. Hunter, hit the game-winning basket in March Madness. The world yearned for more Ron Hunter, and Netflix answered the call.
Similar to Netflix’s show “Quarterback,” which followed the lives of star NFL quarterbacks, “Mid-Major Madness” will go behind the scenes of the most beloved mid-major coaches’ lives, trying to figure out just what makes them so successful. In the case of Ron Hunter, how did he manage to win a recruitment battle for the country’s most sought-after hair model, Gregg Glenn III, and where did he and his son find their gameday oversized baggy pants?
Some other coaches that will be featured alongside Ron Hunter are arch-nemeses Penny Hardaway, my dog’s favorite Michael Vick, and everyone’s dream husband Chris Beard (not mid-major, but who cares). While Netflix might need to access each program’s medical staff and TEMS while filming, it is sure to be must-see TV as these fascinating role models get center stage.
Netflix’s “Mid-Major Madness” is set to be released on April 20, 2026, or when every coach gets arrested — whichever comes first.
