AddiWhen classes begin on Monday, Aug. 26, over-eager students will no longer be held back by Howard-Tilton Memorial Library’s oppressive 3:45 a.m. closing time.

In an email to students Thursday morning, Undergraduate Student Government President Joseph Sotile announced changes that will keep the building open 24 hours a day, Monday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday closing times will be at 9:45 p.m. Beginning Sep. 1, the building will remain open all-night Sunday as well.

Circulation services and the upper floors will close at 1 a.m., but students will be free to use the library’s first-floor Learning Commons space from 1 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Security guards will ensure only Tulane affiliates can enter the building at this time, so students must present their Splash Cards to gain access.

In the announcement, Sotile wrote that USG had partnered with the library in conducting a trial run during the Spring 2019 semester to see whether extending hours would be worthwhile after receiving student suggestions to this effect. After analyzing the results, the library decided to go forward with the changes to operating hours.
