Goodyear Tire honors Tulane, USC with sculptures

Mark Keplinger, Sports Editor

The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company honored Tulane University and the University of Southern California with sculptures of both school’s mascots, the Angry Green Wave and Tommy the Trojan. Tulane and USC are set to square off in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Jan. 2.

Both sculptures, created with over 300 Goodyear Tires, were handcrafted by artist Blake McFarland and took 16 days to complete. The sculptures will serve as the centerpiece of pregame festivities and will be donated to the respective schools following the game.

Goodyear has been making tire sculptures for participants of the Cotton Bowl since 2016. However, the company’s partnership with college football dates back to the 1955 Rose Bowl when the signature Goodyear Blimp provided aerial coverage of the game.
