Fire reported in Stern Hall prompts brief evacuation Friday

New Orleans Fire and Tulane Police were on the scene of a reported fire in Percival Stern Hall on Sept. 22, 2023. (Martha Sanchez)

A fire reported in Percival Stern Hall forced Tulane University students and faculty to evacuate the building briefly Friday afternoon.

Tulane sent an all clear alert at 3 p.m.

The fire began after a “small amount of oil in a lab caught fire,” Tulane spokesperson Mike Strecker said.

He added that the fire was small and “immediately put out by a fire extinguisher.” No injuries were reported, he said.

An emergency alert sent to students and faculty around 2:45 p.m. said a fire was located in the building and urged everyone inside to evacuate. Stern is located on Freret Street and houses science labs.

The New Orleans Fire Department and Tulane Police also arrived at the scene.

“We are also grateful to the New Orleans Fire Department for their quick response to this incident,” Strecker said.
