Tulane University announced on Sunday that head football coach Willie Fritz accepted the position as head football coach for the University of Houston, effective immediately.
The email said Tulane has appointed a search team to find Fritz’s replacement “within the week.” Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Slade Nagle has been appointed the interim head football coach.
Leaving his seven-year legacy, Fritz led the Green Wave through several historical triumphs, with the largest turnaround season in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision history, going from a 2-10 season to a 12-2 last year with a ranking of No. 9 in the AP Top 25 College Football Poll.
Fritz is replacing former Houston football head coach Dana Holgorsen, who was fired after three losing seasons.
Tulane said it is “committed to continuing the upward trajectory of our athletics program” in an email sent Sunday.
