Tulane University unveiled its new head football coach, Jon Sumrall, from Troy University on Friday.
Sumrall will lead the Green Wave to a new beginning after former Tulane head football coach Willie Fritz accepted a position as the head coach for the University of Houston on Nov. 22.
Sumrall has coached at Troy since December 2021, leading the team to two Sun Belt Conference championships and being named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year two times.
Returning to New Orleans, Sumrall served as Tulane’s co-defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2014. Sumrall played a major role in guiding the Green Wave to the New Orleans Bowl in 2013.
During Sumrall’s time at Troy, the team had 23 wins in just two seasons, tied for the third most in the country, following other teams like University of Michigan, University of Georgia and University of Washington.
Tulane said in a statement on Friday that the football team will “continue on its current path and reach even greater heights” with Sumrall as head coach.
