AASU’s CelebrAsian week kicks off

This Monday marked the beginning of CelebrAsian week, the Asian American Student Union’s annual celebration of Asian identity and culture.

Before the official kickoff this Wednesday, AASU members promoted the week’s festivities by giving out boba to students passing by. The next event, a 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament held in the Reily Recreation Center’s auxiliary gym, will occur on Friday, April 5 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The climax of the week’s festivities will be on Saturday evening, with the event known as CelebrAsian day. Headlining the event is Ki Hong Lee, the Korean-American actor known mainly for his roles as Minho in the “Maze Runner” film series and Dong Nguyen in the Netflix show “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” On Saturday, at 7 p.m., Lee will give a talk, followed by a Q&A in the Kendall Cram lecture hall. The doors are open to all students and faculty. For those wishing to attend but unfamiliar with Lee’s work, there will be a screening of clips from his films in the Lake Theatre on Friday between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Also on Saturday, leading up to Lee’s talk, there will be a raffle for everyone who attended the other events of the week, a lion dance and performances by Tulane acapella groups.

CelebrAsian week is AASU’s main programming each year, exemplifying their mission to promote and support Asian identities on Tulane’s campus by providing venues for open discussion among people of diverse backgrounds. For Asian identifying students on campus, AASU is an important source of connection and community, and this week, students and faculty of all backgrounds are encouraged to join in.
