The Tulane University Police Department sent out multiple safety alerts Friday morning after an animal care technician shot himself inside the Hutchinson Memorial Building in the School of Medicine, police say.
TUPD officers responded to a report of “an armed suspicious person on the 9th floor” at around 7:50 a.m. The officers then identified the technician inside a laboratory, according to police.
The employee is being treated at the University Medical Center. TUPD is still gathering information on the incident, according to a statement sent by Kirk Bouleyas, associate vice president of Public Safety and Community Engagement.
“There is no ongoing threat at this time. Hutchinson Building reopened at 9 a.m,” Bouleyas said in the statement. “Resources are available to any Tulane community member affected by this deeply troubling incident. Students seeking help can call 504-920-9900. Employees can call 1-800-624-5544.”
