The body of 25-year-old medical school student Michael Nwokorie was found floating in the Audubon Park lagoon on Aug. 11. The cause of death is still under investigation and could take up to two months to be revealed.  

According to social media, Nwokorie attended the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences and worked at AmeriCorps as a project lead. Nwokorie graduated from Louisiana State University in 2024 with a master’s degree in human resources and leadership and earned his high school diploma at East Ascension High School in Gonzales, Louisiana.  

Nwokorie was a member of the United States Air Force, specializing in air transportation and communications for nearly six years.  

Just days away from his birthday, Nwokorie’s family members and friends have been outspoken about the loss on social media.
