The New Orleans City Council announced last week that $17 million in funding will go towards the construction of a new Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans power complex.
Officials say the power complex will be operational in mid-2025 and will provide more reliable power to the existing drainage system.
According to the board, the complex will include substantial power pulls directly from Entergy’s grid, static frequency chargers and a modern turbine generator for reliable backup power.
The static frequency chargers are expected to convert Entergy’s 60-Hz power to 25-Hz power.
The funding secures a local match required for a U.S. Department of Energy HERO grant, which totals $34 million toward the project.
Councilman Joe Giarrusso said Gov. Jeff Landry’s office is working on a $17 million match in funding toward the complex.
