After dropping their seventh straight game to the league-worst Carolina Panthers — who came in with just a 1-7 record — the New Orleans Saints have finally dismissed head coach Dennis Allen.
The loss to Carolina was puzzling but not shocking for Saints fans, who had already begun expecting disappointment. Statistically, it appeared the Saints controlled the game: They outgained the Panthers 427 to 246 in total yards, logged 10 more first downs, held possession for nine additional minutes and outran the Panthers by 117 yards.
The tip of the iceberg for the firing was the late-game collapse against Carolina. Despite leading 22-17, they ultimately couldn’t stop Bryce Young — yes, Bryce Young — from leading a four-play, 64-yard drive that exposed Allen’s defense and sealed Carolina’s win.
For many inside and outside the Saints organization, Allen’s dismissal seemed long overdue. If the Panthers game made anything clear, it was that Allen’s hold over the locker room — once strong when he served as defensive coordinator under Sean Payton — had vanished. Defense, traditionally the Saints’ strong suit, completely broke down against the league’s weakest offense that day.
During media availability, the sentiment was echoed by players. “We all played a part in him not being here anymore,” Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu said. Prior to the firing, owner Gayle Benson reportedly held discussions with several players about Allen’s future, leading to her decision to let him go.
Now, with Allen out, the Saints have promoted special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi to interim head coach. Known for his tough leadership style, Rizzi received praise from tight end Foster Moreau, who called him an “unbelievable leader of men.” Rizzi’s approach may bring the fresh energy this team needs. After all, players are already wearing “Merry Rizzmas” shirts in the locker room.
Though any playoff hopes have faded, a few wins under Rizzi and quarterback Derek Carr could create an intriguing situation for the Saints’ front office in the offseason. They will need to decide whether to start fresh with a new coaching staff and through the draft or keep the core of Rizzi and Carr together. This new era begins with their upcoming game against their rival, the Atlanta Falcons, on Sunday, Nov. 10. The game is streaming on Fox at 12 p.m. CST.
