New Orleans has announced the establishment of a Walk of Fame. Located at the end of Canal Street, this project will feature prominent natives in various fields, such as sports, arts and entertainment. The city hopes it will serve as a testament to the city’s reach on the world stage.
Victor Holtcamp, Tulane University professor of the course New Orleans on Stage & Screen, said that this recognition benefits the New Orleans community.
“The celebration of people whose impact is recognized and appreciated beyond the city walls is a marker that this is a place that good things come from,” Holtcamp said.
Tulane freshman Julia Dorfman said she intends to become immersed in New Orleans during her four years at Tulane.
“You get to learn about other people and other things that most of us have not experienced before, because we’re from other places. I think it’s important,” Dorfman said.
Sophomore Maya Dressler said she feels similarly, especially given the sentiment of the “Tulane bubble.”
“Most people I know tend to stick to campus instead of exploring New Orleans,” Dressler said. “I believe that immersing yourself into another culture is a great way to achieve personal growth and new perspectives.”
The first 50 plaques are scheduled to be unveiled on Feb. 6, 2025, just three days before Super Bowl 59 is held in New Orleans.
Peyton and Eli Manning, Ellen DeGeneres, Louis Armstrong and Reese Witherspoon are a few of the New Orleans-affiliated celebrities who will be honored in this project.
The city hopes to eventually expand on the Walk of Fame by building a nearby museum, which will offer thorough biographies of the famous individuals who have shaped this city.
