It has been a big week for Tulane University both in track and field and in swimming and diving. Here’s a recap of the exciting week both sports had:
Swimming and diving splashes into season
The Tulane swimming and diving team made quite the splash on Saturday, Jan. 21. Against Little Rock, putting on a masterclass at the Reily Center Natatorium. They swept all 16 events and secured a commanding 178-112 victory over Little. Tulane won, and the Green Wave made some big waves during this match. The team also secured multiple qualifications for the Zone D Diving Championships.
Maya Wilson led the charge for the Green Wave. Wilson performed phenomenally, winning AAC’s swimmer of the week and setting two school records in the 200 free (1:45.46) and 100 free (48.50). Her ferocity in the pool didn’t stop with her; it was complemented by Andrea Zeebe. Zeebe secured three individual wins in the 100 back (54.63), 200 back (1:59.65) and 200 IM (2:04.31), which propelled Tulane to victory.
Tulane’s dominance extended to relay events as well. The 200-medley relay team of Zeebe, Emma Brady, Catherine Russo and Wilson touched the wall first at 1:40.16. The 400-free relay team of Russo, Olcaytu Hatipoglu, Rafaela Sumida and Wilson sealed another victory with a time of 3:19.33. It was clearly these women’s day, as Tulane secured the win with ease.
The diving squad also put on a show, with Anna Behrman earning victories in the 3-meter (265.58) and 1-meter (270.08) dives, securing her a zone qualifying mark. Teammate Kelsey Weddington wasn’t far behind, notching a qualifying score of 267.60 in the 1-meter event to cap off an impressive meet.
The Green Wave will look to keep their momentum rolling as they wrap up the regular season at home against the University of West Florida on Feb. 1. Then, it’s off to Dallas for the American Athletic Conference Swimming Championship from Feb. 19 to 22, where they aim to make an even bigger splash.
Track and field takes center stage in Houston
The Tulane track and field team made every moment count at the FasTrak Athletic Collegiate Challenge, delivering an electric performance that saw them rack up eight top-10 finishes and four personal records in just one day of competition.
Egbe Ndip-Agbor stole the show, blazing through the women’s 200-meter to take first place out of 67 competitors with a standout time 24.26 seconds. She doubled her strong performance by finishing second in the women’s 400-meter (56.47), holding her own against a field of 47 runners.
Not to be outdone, Robyn Larkan showcased her speed and agility with a stellar second-place finish in the women’s 60-meter hurdles (8.81) and a strong fifth-place showing in the women’s 60-meter (7.78), both of which marked season-best times for the sophomore.
In field events, Leah Kennedy proved her mettle by securing second place in the weight throw with an impressive 16.49-meter toss. Sofie Groninger made her mark on the track and in the field, finishing fifth in the women’s 60-meter (7.78) and recording a personal best in the long jump.
Other standout performances included Nahema Dumonteil Cabanas, who shattered her personal best in the 400 with a time of 59.95 en route to a ninth-place finish, and Bella Carroll, who clocked a PR of 7.94 in the 60. On the men’s side, Sam Cohen and Shane Auci battled to eighth and ninth place in the men’s 800-meter, while Albert Tawil-Brown rounded out the Green Wave’s efforts with an 18th-place finish in the mile.
With their eyes set on championship season, Tulane’s track and field athletes will look to build on their success and carry this momentum into their upcoming meets. If their performance in Houston is any indication, the Green Wave is primed for more big moments ahead.
