Men’s tennis is one of Tulane University’s most underappreciated yet accomplished teams. Since the program was launched in 1933, they have held their ground as one of the most competitive college tennis programs in the South. During Tulane’s initial conference tenure in the Southeastern Conference, the team won 18 conference championships, alongside eight NCAA singles titles and two NCAA doubles championships.
Head coach Mark Booras has led Tulane since 2008, guiding Green Wave tennis to multiple appearances in NCAA tournaments.
The team began their fall season at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, from Sept. 12-14. Juniors Alec Gaudin and Daniel Phillips won the first doubles match against the University of North Alabama 8-4, and continued their hot streak against Georgia Tech University and Rice University.
The following weekend was the Youngsville Invite in Youngsville, Louisiana, from Sept. 18-21. As a Hidden Duals event, results were tracked across individual singles and doubles matches rather than a team score.
Tulane scored 15 wins over the weekend across both singles and doubles matches alongside 12 losses. The team dominated against Tyler Junior College. However, Tulane faced tough competition against the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the latter of which ultimately ended with a winning record against the Wave.
Members of the team are currently competing at the ITA All-American Championships, which will serve as the qualifying championship for players to be selected for the NCAA Individual Championships, which were established this year.
The current hot streak bodes well for the rigorous upcoming fall season, ending at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Orlando, Florida from Nov. 18-23.
