The New Orleans Saints continued their losing streak against the currently undefeated Buffalo Bills in Sunday’s game at Highmark Stadium with a score of 31-19. Currently, in last place in the NFC South, this season has further cemented their status as a team on the decline.
One particular rough patch came during an attempted trick play where wide receiver Chris Olave attempted a pass to quarterback Spencer Rattler. A trick play gone awry, the Bills’ safety Cole Bishop quickly intercepted Olave’s pass. At other times, despite repeatedly advancing the ball past midfield, they only scored two field goals. The other two ended in punts.
However, Rattler completed 18 out of 27 of his pass attempts at a 66% success rate. Another highlight was an opening drive touchdown run from running back Kendre Miller, whose wildly inconsistent in his appearances on the field, but had one of his strongest performances yet this season. Likewise, Olave scored his first touchdown of the season after catching a pass from Rattler in the end zone.
On the Bills’ side, quarterback Josh Allen scored three touchdowns and completed 16 out of 22 of his attempted passes, at a 72% success rate. Wide receiver Khalil Shakir took a screen pass for a 43-yard touchdown. However, the Bills’ defense played poorly, with missed tackles leading to Miller scoring his triumphant touchdown as the Saints successfully moved the ball against the Bills’ defense.
“We put ourselves in position. I felt like we were competing. We were playing the right way. We just came up short,” Saints coach Kellen Moore said after the game. While the team has struggled the last couple of years with high coach turnover, Moore’s tenure has resulted in the worst start a Saints coach has had since 1967. We’ll see if the Saints have it in them for a long shot comeback, or if this game is just another ordinary day for the perpetually unlucky Saints.
The Saints will face a 1-3 New York Giants team on Oct. 5 at 12 p.m. CST.
