Performing on opposite sides of the fairgrounds but within five minutes of each other, Bon Iver and The Beach Boys constitute the first notable set conflict of Jazz Fest schedule. Though their respective sounds and demographics differ, the face-off will be sure to split the festival populace between the Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famers and the newest indie-folk god. Bon Iver, headlining at 5:25 p.m. on the Gentilly Stage, is a nine-piece instrumental band led by Justin Vernon, whose hauntingly beautiful falsetto, paired with his sunset set time, will create a hypnotic, easy-listening experience for concert-goers. The Beach Boys, playing at 5:30 p.m. on the Acura Stage, will have a decidedly different feel – their psychedelic, surf-rock harmonies will result in an upbeat show with higher levels of crowd participation. While Bon Iver will most likely draw a more youthful audience, expect the historical reunion of The Beach Boys to include a number of die-hard, older fans. For those looking for an eclectic, soulful vibe to end their first day of Jazz Fest, Bon Iver is for you. If you’re looking to sing and dance along to some of your favorite oldies, head to the main stage for The Beach Boys. For those ambitious readers looking to catch both, hit up Bon Iver, watch the sunset, get your groove on, then end the day with some good vibrations from The Beach Boys.
