Tulane women’s basketball will take on Marshall at 11 a.m.Sunday orning in Fogelman Arena. The Green Wave is coming off ahard-fought 66-51 win against Tulsa on the road, a team Marshallbeat 63-45 earlier in the season, and everything indicates thisupcoming game will be a tough one for both sides. The Wave, however, has the advantage of an open week to prepare for theupcoming contest.
Marshall, 12-6 overall and 3-2 in C-USA, has the ability toeffectively rebound on both sides of the court, grabbing aseason-high 59 boards against Houston in the Thundering Herd’sfirst conference victory, while averaging 42.6 rebounds per game.Marshall has only been outrebounded twice this season. UCF defeatedMarshall 55-44 the last time this occurred. With head coach LisaStockton’s strong emphasis on rebounding, the Wave is not farbehind with only a one-rebound deficit in average boards pergame.
“We are a good defensive team at this point, but what makes agreat defensive team is when we finish with a defensive board,”Marshall associate head coach Roxanne White said.
Marshall has tallied up 205 steals compared to Tulane’s 195, andVictoria Wells, accounts for 45 of the Herd’s steals. Graysoncompares with 50 steals for the season but also plays an average of11 minutes more per game. Tulane’s last game against Tulsa, however, resulted in just 12 turnovers.
The Herd is looking to rebound from three back-to-back lossesfollowing an established five-game winning streak that endedagainst SMU. Meanwhile, Tulane enters the match with two victoriesagainst Alabama-Birmingham and Tulsa, as well as an advantageousweek of rest.
“Fatigue is a little bit of a factor at this point of theseason,” Stockton said. “We’re going to do some things this week toget better, but we’re also going to be able to take a little bit ofa break.”
This fatigue may account for the scoring slump the freshmen areworking to overcome.
“Our freshmen have gone into a little bit of a lull scoring, butthey’re all great scorers,” Stockton said.
The Green Wave is expected to come out ready to play in what isexpected to be a close game, considering the squads’ similar recordof 3-3 conference marks.
“The big thing for us coming off a bye week like this is to comeback on Sunday and be really strong,” Stockton said.
