Country/folk band Hurray for the Riff Raff is performing at 9 p.m. at D.B.A. on Feb. 9.
The New Orleans-based group is headed by spunky singer-songwriter Alynda Lee. Lee ran away from the Bronx, N.Y. at 17 years old and crossed North America by hopping on freight trains. During her travels, Lee sang and played music with fellow vagabonds, learning to play the banjo and washboard after landing in the Big Easy. Lee’s talent for crafting fresh, heartfelt lyrics and singing her heart out has led her and Hurray for the Riff Raff to self-release two albums and to release one CD under a label in Europe.
The Riff Raff’s unique sound stems not just from the vintage feel of Lee’s voice and the twang of her banjo, but from the accordion, piano and drums that also frame the songs. Tracks “Daniella,” “Here It Comes” and “Dance With Death” are among those heralded for defining the Big Easy’s musical culture.
