Five shooting incidents, including two near Bourbon Street, interrupted Halloween revelry early Nov. 1 downtown, killing two people and injuring 14. While no Tulane students were injured in the gunfire, some students witnessed the shootings and many students expressed concern about safety following them.

Nineteen-year-old Marvin Carter, the top suspect in the Bourbon Street shooting, surrendered himself to the New Orleans Police Department Nov. 4. He is charged with the first-degree murder of Albert Glover.

Tulane sophomore Matt Pattsner was on the streetcar at Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue when the shooting occurred.

“I heard what sounded like fireworks, and then, nine cop cars pulled up,” Pattsner said.

Freshman Zachary Stine and his friends were walking down Frenchmen Street when they were stopped by police and told to turn around.

“Part of the way down, a wall of mounted police appeared in front of us, and I didn’t really know what was happening,” Stine said.

Vice President of Student Affairs Mike Hogg emailed the student body following the shootings, reminding students to travel in groups, use common sense and utilize services such as SafeRide.

“We just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of what happened,” Hogg said. “I think any time there’s an event of that magnitude, everyone needs to be aware of it and reminded to be careful.”
