We are a group of diligent, law-abiding Tulane University community members who are dismayed and disgusted by Tulane’s failure to contain an unregistered anti-Israel protest and occupation of Tulane property. 

Yesterday, throngs of protesters descended on our campus in an unregistered event organized by Tulane and Loyola University Students for a Democratic Society chapters. Around 6 p.m. yesterday, these protesters occupied the lawn in front of Gibson Hall and set up an encampment, vowing not to leave until their demands are met. Tulane administration and police were critically caught off guard and failed to contain this threat when it was still early. 

These protestors spewed antisemitic slogans on megaphones and chided police officers. Time and time again, they repeated “From the river to the sea,” a slogan deemed by the U.S. House of Representatives as hate speech. They praised terror groups, holding signs reading “victory to the Palestinian resistance.” Police arrested several individuals for trespassing, battery on an officer and resisting arrest, but they appear to have been released from custody. 

These protests are not wholly made up of Tulane students. An overwhelming number of members are not affiliated with the school, and these outsiders may have chosen Tulane as their target simply because it has the largest Jewish community in Louisiana. Tulane is currently letting agitators and outsiders remain on its campus and has bent to the will of the mob, allowing these protestors to disrupt classes during the last week of school.

Allowing an unregistered protest to take place on Tulane’s property sets a dangerous precedent for the future and shows these groups that they can take advantage of the Tulane administration and the Tulane community. It is crucial to take care of this threat before it gets out of hand. Violence and antisemitism have been a constant at every single anti-Israel encampment protest at universities across the country. Jewish students at several universities have been spat on, attacked, threatened and refused entry to their own campus.

We demand Tulane’s administration put an end to this unregulated, hateful occupation of Tulane property and enforce its own rules on unregistered protests and trespassing.
