Emil Garner, 23, a Tulane exchange student from Denmark, was killed in a car accident in Holmdel, New Jersey over the weekend. Jan Edelmann, 21, a Tulane exchange student from Switzerland, and a Tulane parent, father of Carolyn Rehm ’17, were also seriously injured in the accident.

“The death of someone as young, outgoing and kind as Emil is a devastating loss to all who knew and loved him,” President Mike Fitts said in an email sent to members of the A.B. Freeman Business School.

An article on NJ.com said the crash occurred at 8:42 a.m. Friday, Nov. 27 on Rt. 34 in Holmdel. The accident was a head-on collision between a Mazda sedan and a Toyota Prius.

A member of Tulane’s student affairs traveled to New Jersey to meet with Garner’s father when he arrived from Denmark, according to the email from Fitts.
