A student was assaulted at approximately 11 p.m. Friday at the corner of Plum and Audubon streets.

A fight broke out between the male student and an unknown person after a verbal altercation. The victim was suddenly attacked and he fell to the ground. Four or five other people joined in, kicking and punching the victim. When a witness began to scream, the assailants fled towards Broadway street, according to reports from the Tulane University Police Department.

When the police attempted to review footage from a security camera located in the area, they discovered the camera wasn’t functioning.

Senior David Preda, chief copy editor for The Hullabaloo, was walking past at the time of the incident.

“There was a guy facedown on the ground with a girl crying over him,” Preda said. “Two people were on the phone calling the police as witnesses to an assault.”

The suspects were described as black men in their 20s, all wearing dark and baggy clothing.

New Orleans Police Department is investigating this simple battery case. TUPD sent a crime alert to members of the Tulane community at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
