The Louisiana Sports Writers Association named redshirt junior pitcher Alex Massey Pitcher of the Week after he led the Wave to a 3-1 win at Houston Sunday. Massey is the second Tulane player of the season to earn the award.

“Receiving Pitcher of the Week is a huge honor but I try not to pay too much attention to individual honors,” Massey said. “My goal is to be a leader on this team and I will do whatever I can to help us win.”

Massey has an ERA of 2.40 since earning making his first start as part of the weekend rotation two weeks ago against East Carolina. Massey has pitched well against American Athletic Conference opponents, which culminated in his stellar game against Houston. Massey pitched nine innings, struck out five batters and allowed just two hits.

“Pitching my first game was great, and I hope that the momentum carries into this weekend against Central Florida,” Massey said. “I will continue to let my pitches and my body work for me and stay smooth at the plate with a consistent release point.”

Head coach David Pierce was highly complimentary of Massey and said that he has emerged as an important piece in the rotation.

“Massey is well deserving of this award,” Pierce said. “When you prepare the right way like he did and then go out and perform confidently the pitching is solid. He proved that he’s made of the right stuff and continues to work hard since coming out of his recent lull. Massey has proved through overcoming his bumps that he is has a strong character.”

Massey will look to continue his hot streak when Tulane starts a three-game homestand against Central Florida 6:30 p.m. Friday at Turchin Stadium.
