A slightly chilly breeze cuts through the typical New Orleans humidity, the temperature drops into the frigid mid-60s and students in leggings and sweatshirts swarm the campus. This can only mean one thing: Halloween is quickly approaching. Instead of increasing your heart rate with a horror film after the mid-October scaries of midterms and fighting with your parents over fall break, turn on a non-scary Halloween classic. Melt into your pillow and crack open a bag of candy corn with one of these top five classic Disney channel films this spooky season.

Halloweentown

The Halloweentown series consists of  four movies, the perfect amount for a Saturday night of binge-watching. Whether you watch them back-to-back or one at a time, you’re sure to be entertained. The first film is “Halloweentown,” an hour and a half long thriller that chronicles three siblings’ discovery of their secret magic powers and the world of Halloweentown, a mythical land where their grandmother lives. The kids work together to defeat the dark force trying to take over Halloweentown. The movie ends with a cliffhanger, leaving you wanting more. Good thing there are sequels!

Twitches

“Twitches” is another Disney Channel Halloween movie marathon necessity. Starring Tia and Tamera Mowry  —  known for their performances in the TV show “Sister, Sister”  –  as identical twin witches, or Twitches. The Twitches are separated at birth but find each other just in time to defend themselves and their families against evil. It may be a common plot in Disney movies, but the feel-good ending makes it worth the repetition every time. This film will have you smiling and laughing along the whole time.

Hocus Pocus

If you’re looking for a laugh, this movie is perfect for you. “Hocus Pocus” puts a comedic spin on the resurrection of three executed witches who come back together for one last time to bring terror to the magical land of Massachusetts. The three mortals who accidentally brought the witches back from the dead must stop their evil plan. “Hocus Pocus” is a timeless Disney staple and a sure crowd pleaser.

Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie

Turn on the Halloween special to flash back to the good old days of watching “Wizards of Waverly Place” on a Sunday morning with a bowl of sugary cereal. This movie stars Selena Gomez, David Henrie and Jake T. Austin as they navigate their way through a vacation gone wrong. This movie is sure to transport you back to your childhood Disney days and provide amusement along the way.

Bonus: The Sequels

“Twitches Too” and the “Halloweentown” sequels — “Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge,” “Halloweentown High” and “Return to Halloweentown” — are the only things spookier than the original films. “Twitches Too” is full of drama and mystery as the reunited sisters set out on a quest to find their birth father. This thriller is sure to have you on the edge of your seat and is the perfect follow-up to an already compelling movie. The “Halloweentown” sequels follow the siblings through their awkward teen years and into adulthood in nail-biting storylines where the problems in the mystical land of Halloweentown never seem to end. Both sagas are entertaining, easy to watch and will fill you with a warm sense of nostalgia on a cool October night.

Along with a bag of popcorn and a few good friends, these seasonal favorites are sure to get you into the Halloween spirit without giving you nightmares.
