Playlist: Rappin Christmas

Jessica Galloway, Intersections Editor

It’s that time of year again. You can always tell when Christmas is approaching in Louisiana when the high today is 73 and the low is 40, and somehow there are dead leaves everywhere despite our total lack of a real autumn. In honor of the most wonderful time of the year, here is a list of a few of our favorite rap songs about Christmas, our ranking of them using classic Christmas motifs and an accompanying Spotify playlist featuring these songs and more.

Christmas in Harlem” by Kanye West

It’s okay that I’m including Kanye on this list because it’s old Kanye. This Christmas tune from 2010 features Teyana Taylor and CyHi the Prynce, two of his G.O.O.D. Music sign-ees. It also sounds pretty much like a My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy outtake, which is exactly what I need to forget about the fact that he made “ye.” I’ll give this song a seven and a half Chestnuts roasting on an open fire (out of ten).

“8 Days of Christmas” by Destiny’s Child

Destiny Child’s hip-hop take on 12 Days of Christmas is the perfect bop that everyone in the family will agree on, from the single aunties to the teens feeling ‘90s nostalgia for absolutely no reason. I’ll give one whole partridge in a pear tree to this number.

“Christmas Rappin’” by Kurtis Blow

Everyone knows that Kurtis Blow is like the father of popular rap music, and this Christmas song is his third most listened to song on Spotify, but I had not discovered it until recently and it’s been on repeat while I get ready for class for the past three days. Five out of five golden rings.

“Merry Muthafuckin’ Xmas” by Eazy-E

Christmas music is usually pretty wholesome in lyrical content, but this Xmas hit by Compton rapper Eazy-E will remind you of all the reasons our mothers disapprove of the genre. I’m giving this holiday classic nine ladies dancing, and one of them is definitely me.
